More than just hotels: Youth hostels, couch surfing and more

You’ve caught the travel bug, but the prices of hotels give you a panic attack. There are alternatives to the mediocrity and blandness of hotels; I’m talking about hostels. Hostels have been given a bad rap in movies and the dated memories of parents who backpacked in the seventies, but the reality is that hostels offer an affordable and culturally eye opening travel experience.

Whether traveling in a group or alone, youth hostels offer a place to meet other travelers, learn about the hot spots in the area, and pay as low as $15 (depending on the exchange rate) to sleep. There are multiple room options in most hostels: singles, doubles, and for the extremely social – up to sixteen beds in a larger room. The restroom situations vary as well; treat it as a college dorm.

When booking hostels do research, ask opinions, and check out the area. Is the hostel near places you want to see? What kind of amenities does the hostel offer? For example, some hostels require you to pay extra for linens, while others include the service in the booking price.

Before you book a hostel I recommend looking at hostels.com. Just choose the country you’re heading to and it will give you a list of availability for the dates you’ve picked. The most helpful part of this website are the reviews from travelers like you, which are usually reliable. You know what you’re looking for; hostels can range from a fifth floor apartment in Rome, to a beach resort on a Greek island. This website makes research quick and easy, so even if you have to catch a train in twenty minutes you can book a hostel before you leave.

The most important part of traveling is the experience you gain from immersing yourself in the culture. Other travelers you meet in the hostel can offer invaluable insight to the local area, and many local businesses and attractions advertise specials in hostels. Even the best travel books can miss local treasures.

If you don’t have time to stay in a hostel you can always opt to take a night train and sleep all the way to your destination. There is also the option of sleeping in an airport, though you’ll probably end up on the floor. For long stays, and to truly appreciate your surroundings, book a hostel and share your experiences with others.
